Visualizing Internal Processes for Clarity

Document. All. Of. Your. Processes.

A simple diagram will do.

I used to document processes in a Word document. (*gag*)

You know what happened to those Word documents? They went into the digital wasteland of my company's server.

When I started doing simple diagrams I could bring up those visuals with team members to explain the steps and/or modify the process as the business evolved.

Visual flowcharts deliver better clarity than Word documents.

Documenting your internal processes can actually make your team stronger and better. I think a lot of times companies tend to, whenever I say document, they think of a Word document and it's step one, step two, step three. What actually works better is a visual chart. So it's almost like a flowchart you're gonna put in there of who's responsible for what and the next step in the process.

Whenever you actually put a visual in front of people, it helps them remember it better than just putting it into a Word document. Also, whenever you need to go back and modify that workflow, it's easier to do that in a visual piece rather than a written piece. I have always made sure that whenever I was onboarding a new team member that they had access to those visual workflow documents so that they could do their job better and they knew what was expected of them.

I also want to encourage you as you're going through and documenting these processes, thinking about:

  1. Onboarding new staff
  2. For you as a marketing leader, to be able to take time away from the office and be confident that the company is still going to be able to do the work in the right way and making sure things are logged appropriately.
So documenting your processes is a huge value, not only to the business, but also to you.
