80/20 Marketing Rule

Stop. Talking. About. Yourself. All. The. Time.

Seems like a no-brainer piece of advice, amirite?

However, most companies don't abide by the 80/20 marketing rule.

  • 80% of your messaging is providing value to your audience
  • 20% of your messaging is promoting your business

And if you think "well, our clients find it valuable if they know my company provides these services" then you are the problem.

If a B2B company is constantly promoting itself I can guarantee you their audience is lacking in engagement. Their messaging is falling on deaf ears.

Honestly, I'd unsubscribe/unfollow so fast from this type of company.

If a B2B company is sharing content around thought leadership, trends, insights, and anything that's going to make my life/career better, I'm going to pay attention to what they have to say more often.
