Early in my career I was asked to think strategically about a complex issue the company was facing.
AND I STRUGGLED WITH IT!
Because I kept internalizing the obstacles, the hurdles, the ungodly logistics, and the "we can't afford it" of the answers I kept coming up with.
I was a doer. Whatever idea I came up with I'd be the one person to implement it. And it seemed daunting.
However, I learned along the way. I asked better questions. I would walk non-marketing peers through the ungodly logistics. I'd seek their input. I would throw out the craziest ideas where we had absolutely no budget, no people to make it happen, and not enough time to get it done.
And I was able to create some wickedly cool and off-the-wall solutions through the strategic thinking process.
