Outsourcing vs. In-House Marketing Decision Tree

Last week, I shared the costs of hiring a junior level in-house marketing coordinator vs. outsourcing marketing projects to seasoned specialist.

Now, I'm giving you a very simple 3 question yes-or-no decision tree to help you make that decision.

In my previous video, I showed some numbers about in-house versus outsourcing some marketing work. Now, I want to go through a very simple question tree to determine if outsourcing or hiring in-house right for your firm. While I'm talking specifically to about the AEC industry, you can adjust these numbers for what works for your industry and for your business.

The first question is "is your firm revenue over $10 million?" If it's not, then you probably want to outsource. If it is, let's go to question number two.

Question number two is "do you have 30 plus hours per week of consistent marketing work?" If you don't, you need to outsource, and that may be one of those project-based types of outsourcing to specialists. But if you do, go to question three.

And question three asks, "do you have someone to manage or mentor a coordinator?" If you don't, you definitely need to outsource. If you do have that person identified already, then an in-house new hire may work for your company.

And while this is a very simple question tree, it does lead to the biggest thing that I encourage companies to think about. If you want to bring in a junior marketing professional you really need to make sure that they have someone that can guide, mentor, and coach them into how your company operates.

If you don't currently have the bandwidth to do that in-house, definitely consider outsourcing.
