Do you know your website's purpose?
Maybe the better questions is ... does your CEO know what your website's purpose is?
I can analyze website data with the best of them but looking at the charts and graphs don't mean much unless I understand what are you tracking to accomplish with your site's presence.
For some companies, it is to generate sales. For other companies, it is to be seen as a valid business. And others are using it as a recruiting tool.
There are plenty of reasons to have a website.
Knowing what the business purpose is will help decipher the data and then make good business decisions from the analysis.
What is your website's purpose? There's no right answer to this, but it does help you look at your website analytics through that lens.
I was talking to someone recently and I asked that question, "what is your website's purpose?" They looked at me and said, "I don't know what you mean."
For some companies, they may be using their website as a catchall for info about the company. So if you have a prospect that's out there and they're doing research on your company, are you seen as a resource for the industry or are you trying to sell services. I'm not saying that's right or wrong, but there's a purpose to a website. I also know some companies have a huge drive right now to try to recruit top applicants, so they may be using their website as a recruitment tool.
Now, whenever you go to look at your Google Analytics or any of your website data, that's the lens you wanna look at it through. How many people are coming to your careers page if you're trying to do a full blown recruitment campaign? How many people are going to a white paper or your blog if they're looking for educational resources? How many people are going to your contact us page if they're trying to submit a bid or reach out to someone at your company?
Knowing what the purpose is of your website and having leadership understand that that's the purpose of it can help you dig through your data and understand how people are actually utilizing your website.
